Abstract
This study investigates the siblings undergoing tragic fate as well as involving in incestuous relationship in Tabitha Suzuma’s Forbidden. Lochan and Maya are siblings living in a dysfunctional family in the United Kingdom and commit an incestuous relationship. Descriptive analytical interpretative method, Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis, and Arthur Miller’s concept of modern tragedy are used to investigate how Lochan as the hero and Maya suffer and eventually commit incestuous relationship. The result of this study shows the parents’ problems and the absent of the parents’ role model for their children affect Lochan and Maya to experience unresolved Oedipus complex. Therefore, Lochan and Maya displace their love toward their parents to each other. Their fixation in the phallic stage causes Lochan’s and Maya’s superegos are stunted in the genital stage. In their mind contestations, Lochan’s and Maya’s egos fail to protect themselves since they are dominated by the id and refuses to meet the superego’s standard. Before Lochan acknowledges his sexual desire towards Maya, Lochan’s ego suppresses his incestuous urges which resulting him to suffer from social phobia. Lochan and Maya believe that their incestuous relationship is natural and should not be prohibited by the societies as in many stories of modern tragedy.
