Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perubahan kepribadian kepribadian tokoh utama pada novel The Book of Tomorrow. Metodologi yang diterapkan pada penelitian ini adalah analisis deskriptif. The Book of Tomorrow adalah novel yang mengisahkan kehidupan seorang gadis remaja manja bernama Tamara Goodwin yang tertuang dalam sebuah buku harian yang secara ajaib dapat menuliskan kejadian yang akan terjadi keesokan harinya. Penelitian ini secara khusus akan menampilkan perubahan kepribadian apa sajakah yang terjadi pada tokoh utama dalam novel dan bagaimana perubahan kepribadian tersebut dilihat dalam novel dengan menganalisa narasi dan dialog novel sebagai sumber data. Dari analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perubahan karakter pada tokoh utama novel, Tamara Goodwin, dari awal hingga akhir cerita. Perubahan karakter tersebut dibandingkan berdasarkan plot yang terjadi sebelum dan sesudah tragedy kematian ayah tokoh utama. Tokoh utama berkembang dari seseorang yang tertutup, acuh, tidak sensitive, kekanakan, tidak bertanggung jawab, malas, manja, egois, tidak bersyukur, pemberontak, dan sulit beradaptasi, menjadi seseorang dengan kepribadian yang lebih baik, peduli, toleran, rajin, sensitive, dewasa, terbuka, bertanggungjawab, penuh rasa syukur, mudah beradaptasi, dan patuh. Kepribadian tokoh utama didominasi oleh id pada awal kehidupannya, sedangkan setelah kematian yahnya dan kepindahannya ke desa kepribadiannya didominasi oleh ego dan superego. Psikoanalisis digunakan sebagai pendekatan untuk menganalisis kepribadian dan perubahan kepribadian seseorang dengan menggunakan teori id, ego, dan superego dan pikiran sadar dan tidak sadar oleh Freud. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi referensi berguna untuk penelitian selanjutnya dalam menganalisa penokohan dan karaketer dalam novel dengan menggunakan kajian psikoanalis serta memperkaya kajian karya sastra di Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris. The purpose of the study is to reveal how the main character’s personality changes mostly through the narration parts of the story. The method employed in this study is descriptive analysis. The Book of Tomorrow is a story about an over spoiled adolescent girl named Tamara Goodwin that written in a magical diary which be able to predict what will happen tomorrow. This study will show what personality changes of the main character portrayed in the story. Furthermore, the study will reveal how are the main character’s personality changes portrayed in the novel. The writer will analyze the narration and dialogue of the novel as source of data. Referring to the analysis and interpretation of the data, it can be concluded that the main character of novel The Book of Tomorrow, Tamara Goodwin, has changed her personality from the beginning to the end of the story. These personality changes classified based on the plot happened before and after the tragedy of the death of the main character’s father. Tamara develops from an introvert, intolerant, ignorant, insensitive, childish, irresponsible, lazy, spoiled, selfish, unthankful, rebellious, and inadaptable into better personality such as tolerant, care, diligent, sensitive, mature, extrovert, responsible, thankful, adaptable, and obedient. The main character’s personality psyche personality dominated by id at her earlier life. The main character’s personality dominated by superego and ego after the tragedy of her father’s death and her moving to the village. Psychoanalysis was chosen as the approach of the study by using Freud’s theory id, ego, and superego and conscious and unconscious. Hopefully, the results of this research can be a useful reference for further research in analyzing characterization and character in the novel by using psychoanalysis in literature approach and enrich the literature study in English Department.
