Abstract

Reniers, Rhiannon Corcoran, Richard Drake, Nick M. Shryane, Birgit A. Vӧllm. This study aims to determine the profile of students' empathy towards students with special needs at SMPN 232 Jakarta. This research was conducted with descriptive quantitative method. The research subjects were 231 students of 7th and 8th grade. The sampling used proportionate stratified random sampling method. The instrument used in collecting research data is the adaptation of The QCAE (Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy) developed by Renate L.E.P. Reniers, Rhiannon Corcoran, Richard Drake, Nick M. Shryane, Birgit A. Vӧllm. The results of this study indicated that students' empathy for students with special needs was only 21% (49 students) in the high category, 63% (146 students) in the medium category, and 16% (36 students) in the low category. Based on grade level, the empathy of 7th grade students was better than 8th grade students. Based on gender, female students had empathy better than male students both in cognitive and affective aspects. High student empathy toward students with special needs will increase acceptance and awareness of students to special needs students and make students with disabilities can be more confident in everyday life.
