Abstract

The rapid growth of Paylater services in Indonesia, particularly among Generation Z, has raised concerns regarding financial behavior and digital credit management due to low Financial Literacy and weak Self Control. This study aims to analyze the effect of Financial Literacy and Self Control on Paylater usage among Generation Z students, as well as to examine the role of Lifestyle as a moderating variable. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method through online questionnaires. The population consisted of 732 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, class of 2022, with samples selected using the proportional random sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results indicate that Financial Literacy has a positive and significant effect on Paylater usage, while Self Control has a negative and significant effect. Lifestyle was not proven to moderate the effect of Financial Literacy on Paylater usage; however, it was proven to moderate the effect of Self Control on Paylater usage, where the more consumptive the students' Lifestyle, the weaker the ability of Self Control to suppress Paylater usage. This study has implications for students to improve their Financial Literacy and Self Control, as well as for Paylater service providers and regulators to develop better financial education features in order to encourage wise and responsible use of digital credit services among Generation Z.
