Abstract

Islamic veil has long been a subject to countless discussion across the world, particularly in European countries and the United States of America. The practice of veil itself often seen as controversial to European and American government, which ultimately leads to the passing of law concerning the veil in America and some European countries. By utilizing stratified purposeful sampling, the data of this study were taken from two Q1 Scopus-indexed journal articles and analysed by deploying M. A. K. Halliday’s Transitivity system and Appraisal framework postulated by J. R. Martin and P. R. R. White. This study attempts to identify the authorial voice on the politicisation of veil in European and American context. The initial verdict on the subject exhibits the domination of material and relational processes in both articles in framing the distinct outlook between the European and American governments on the issue of veil, as well as the positive appreciation in monoglossic utterance of the article to illustrate how the veiling issue is depicted in European and American contexts. In European context, veiled Muslim women is faced with rigorous regulations which resulted in the act of unveiling. Meanwhile, the veil in American context repeatedly faces challenges and yet, the practice of veil is protected by the American Constitution.
