Abstract
This study aims to analyze the relevance of speaking materials to the speaking needs of vocational school students, majoring in automotive (teknik kendaraan ringan). There were 23 students in the eleventh grade and 15 English teaches from 15 vocational high schools in East Jakarta, Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta, and ten practitioners who were involved in this study. The research methodology used in this study was case study which involved three instruments; questionnaire, interview, and document analysis (textbook). The finding of this study was that the speaking materials presented in Teknik Kendaraan Ringan are not relevant to the students’ needs since the speaking materials given by the teachers were oriented to the successfulness of the final examination, not to the real world context. Therefore, the need analysis has to be done in Teknik Kendaraan Ringan classrooms in order to help teachers understand more about how to design or select proper materials related to the students’ major as well as the variation of the learning and teaching activities. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesesuaian antara materi berbicara dengan kebutuhan berbicara siswa SMK jurusan otomotif (teknik kendaraan ringan). Penelitian ini melibatkan 23 murid kelas 11 dan 15 guru bahasa Inggris dari 15 SMK di Jakarta Timur, Jakarta Pusat, Jakarta Barat, dan Jakarta Utara, serta 10 praktisi. Teknik penelitian yang digunakan adalah studikasus yang melibatkan tiga instrumen penelitian; kuesioner, wawancara, dan analisis dokumen (buku teks). Hasil yang diperoleh dari instrumen tersebut adalah materi berbicara yang diberikan di Teknik Kendaraan Ringan tidak sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa untuk berbicara dikarenakan materi yang diberikan guru dalam kelas masih bertujuan untuk kesuksesan siswa dalam menghadapi ujian akhir. Oleh karena itu, analisis kebutuhan dilakukan di kelas Teknik Kendaraan Ringan dengan tujuan membantu guru lebih memahami tentang bagaimana membuat dan/atau memilih materi yang sesuai dengan jurusan siswa begitu pula dengan variasi kegiatan belajar mengajar.
