Abstract

***** This research aims to analyze Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns and Deborah Ellis’ The Breadwinner regarding how Afghan society treats women, the responses of female characters in the novels toward the treatment of Afghan society, and the similarities and differences between both novels. In doing the analysis, this study uses the theory of Liberal Feminism by Mary Wollstonecraft and the concept of Girl Power. The result of the analysis indicates that the female characters in the novel as the representation of women in Afghanistan, often experience discrimination and oppression in the scope of education, marriage/family, society/public life, and work life, especially during the domination of the Taliban with a strong patriarchy. The responses that are shown by the female characters in the novels represent the concept of Girl Power that can be seen from their struggle and courage in facing the strict society. Both novels also show some similarities and differences. The similarities can be seen from the social issues of the story which includes in the area of education, marriage/family, society, and work life; the social background of the family which refers to the ethnic groups like of Pashtun and Tajik; and the embodiment of girl power by the characters in the novel who struggle to survive from the brutality of men characters. As for the differences, it can be seen through the representation of women which represents the images of wife and daughter/children and the root of women’s oppression which comes from the family and the society that is portrayed in the novels.
