Abstract

Konstruksi gender merupakan sebuah pandangan tentang bagaimana masyarakat memaknai konsep gender. Bicara tentang gender maka umumnya dianggap sebagai konsep pendamping yang berkaitan erat dengan bentuk fisik yang dimilikinya. Laki - laki akan dipasangkan dengan konsep maskulinitas dan perempuan akan dipasangkan dengan konsep femininitas. Namun, Judith Butler mematahkan stigma tersebut. Dia tidak setuju dengan penjelasan bahwa gender adalah sesuatu yang dibentuk secara mutlak dalam budaya. Menurut Butler, gender adalah suatu bentuk bergerak secara dinamis. Butler meyakini bahwa gender terbentuk melalui performativitas yang terjadi secara terus - menerus hingga menciptakan sebuah identitas gender (Butler, 1990). Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis yang berarti bahwa penelitian ini dilakukan dengan kegiatan pengamatan dan objektivitas dalam menemukan sebuah konstruksi realitas sosial. Penelitian ini akan membahas bagaimana konstruksi gender yang dibangun dalam film melalui simbol - simbol teks digital yang terkandung di dalamnya menggunakan model semiotika Ferdinand de Saussure untuk menemukan penanda dan petanda dalam film yang diteliti,. Film yang diteliti yaitu film asal Jepang berjudul Monster (2023). Film ini telah memenangkan penghargaan Queer Palm dan skenario terbaik di Cannes International Film Festival 2023. Film ini membahas tentang bagaimana polemik mengenai seseorang yang memiliki potensi menjadi bagian dari kaum gay berdasarkan pandangan masyarakat heteronormativis. Namun, film Monster (2023) tidak hanya membahas tentang queer tapi juga membahas isu - isu gender lainnya mengenai pandangan sosial terhadap kaum pria dan wanita yang masih dipandang tidak setara di mata masyarakat. Sesuai dengan fungsi film digunakan untuk merekonstruksi sebuah kenyataan ke dalam sebuah karya sastra audio-visual, film Monster (2023) juga menampilkan bagaimana cerminan realitas mengenai konstruksi gender. Dengan dilakukan analisis semiotika Saussure, konstruksi gender yang digambarkan dalam film Monster (2023) yaitu seperti berikut ini (1) Konstruksi Gender Sebagai Konsep yang Elastis, (2) Konstruksi Gender Pria Sebagai Sosok Dominan, (3) Konstruksi Gender Wanita Sebagai Objek Diskriminasi Gender, dan (4) Konsep Androgini Sebagai Identitas Gender. ***** Gender construction is a view of how society interprets the concept of gender. Talking about gender is generally considered as a companion concept that is closely related to the physical form it has. Men will be paired with the concept of masculinity and women will be paired with the concept of femininity. However, Judith Butler breaks the stigma. She disagrees with the explanation that gender is something that is shaped absolutely in culture. According to Butler, gender is a dynamically moving form. Butler believes that gender is formed through performativity that occurs continuously to create a gender identity (Butler, 1990). The research method used is a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm, which means that this research is carried out with observation and objectivity in finding a construction of social reality. This research will discuss how gender construction is built in films through digital text symbols contained in them using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic model to find signifiers and signs in the films studied. The film studied is a Japanese film entitled Monster (2023). It has won the Queer Palm and best screenplay awards at the 2023 Cannes International Film Festival. This film discusses how the polemic about someone who has the potential to be part of the gay community based on the views of heteronormativist society. However, the movie Monster (2023) does not only discuss queer but also discusses other gender issues regarding social views of men and women who are still seen as unequal in the eyes of society. In accordance with the function of film used to reconstruct a reality into an audio-visual literary work, the movie Monster (2023) also shows how a reflection of reality regarding gender construction. By analyzing Saussure's semiotics, the gender construction depicted in the movie Monster (2023) is as follows (1) Gender Construction as an Elastic Concept, (2) Male Gender Construction as a Dominant Figure, (3) Female Gender Construction as an Object of Gender Discrimination, and (4) Androgyny Concept as Gender Identity.
