Abstract
*****ABSTRACT***** This study aims to look at the role of metacognition in the piano practice process for Piano Recital students in the 119th semester of Jakarta State University Music Education Study Program. The reason for conducting the study was due to the need to increase the effectiveness of the piano practice process among music education students. The theoretical study used as a reference in this research is metacognition with various components in it, and its implementation in the music practice process based on concepts, stages, success indicators, and various strategies. This research design uses an explanatory sequential mixed method. This approach uses quantitative data first as a reference to deepen the findings through qualitative data. Based on the administration of the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) questionnaire to a population of 10 Piano Recital students, a total score of 1,506 (73.82%) was found, with a mean of 2.95 (range of scores from Likert scale 1-4) and classified as good. In addition, the highest mean component was found to be debugging strategies (M=3.20), the highest mean item derived from conditional knowledge (M=3.80), and the lowest mean component and item information management strategies (M=2.80). Representations of participants based on high, medium, and low metacognition scores, also selected 1 participant each per representation, from the same population to be interviewed at the qualitative stage. It was found that participants had not applied metacognition fully because there were components that some participants had not realized the urgency of, and not all of them had reached the highest level of metacognition involving actively monitored strategies. Through these findings, this study concludes that the role of metacognition in the piano practice process is still not fully realized and needs to be developed so that it can be applied optimally. The limitations of this study include the limited number of participants, limited time, and has not reviewed the discussion of the reciprocity of metacognition with the music practice process; the role of the teacher; and metacognition in other musical fields. Therefore, this study suggests overcoming methodological limitations in future research. Practical suggestions from this study are for students to realize the urgency of metacognition so that it can be applied daily, research metacognition in other fields of music, and replicate the study in different populations.
