Abstract
Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan implementasi karakter toleransi antarumat beragama pada peserta didik kelas XI di SMA Negeri 21 Jakarta. Fenomena intoleransi yang masih terjadi di lingkungan pendidikan mendorong pentingnya penelitian ini dilakukan secara mendalam. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi langsung, wawancara mendalam kepada peserta didik, guru PPKn, guru agama, serta pakar keilmuan (expert opinion), dan dokumentasi. Teori utama yang digunakan adalah teori toleransi beragama menurut Djohan Effendi, yang menekankan pentingnya penghargaan terhadap perbedaan keyakinan dan kebebasan beragama tanpa harus memaksakan keseragaman ajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi karakter toleransi pada peserta didik kelas XI terbentuk melalui sinergi antara tiga aspek utama, yaitu: (1) pembelajaran mata pelajaran PPKn yang menyampaikan materi “harmonisasi dalam keberagaman”; (2) pendidikan agama yang menanamkan nilai saling menghormati dan mengasihi sesama umat beragama; dan (3) budaya sekolah yang mendukung keberagaman melalui kegiatan keagamaan bersama, seperti buka puasa bersama, perayaan Natal, dan ibadah mingguan lintas agama. Peserta didik menunjukkan sikap menghargai perbedaan, tidak memaksakan keyakinan kepada orang lain, serta aktif dalam menciptakan suasana damai dan inklusif di lingkungan sekolah. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa pembentukan karakter toleransi tidak hanya ditanamkan secara teoritis melalui pembelajaran, tetapi juga dibentuk melalui pengalaman sosial langsung yang positif dan interaktif. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi empiris dalam penguatan pendidikan karakter di lingkungan sekolah yang multikultural, serta menjadi dasar untuk pengembangan lebih lanjut dalam pendidikan kewarganegaraan yang berwawasan kebhinekaan. ***** This study aims to describe the implementation of interfaith tolerance character among Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 21 Jakarta. The persistence of intolerance in educational settings highlights the need for a deeper exploration of how tolerance is practiced in schools. This research applies a qualitative approach using descriptive methods. Data collection techniques include direct observation, in-depth interviews with students, civic education and religious teachers, expert opinion, and documentation. The theoretical foundation of this study is Djohan Effendi’s concept of religious tolerance, which emphasizes respect for religious differences and the right to freedom of belief without enforcing uniformity. The findings reveal that the character of religious tolerance is developed through the synergy of three key components: (1) civic education (PPKn) lessons that discuss harmony in diversity; (2) religious education that instills respect and compassion across faiths; and (3) a school culture that actively embraces diversity through inclusive activities, such as communal iftar (breaking the fast), Christmas celebrations, and interfaith worship sessions. Students demonstrated a consistent attitude of respect for religious differences, refraining from imposing their beliefs on others, and actively promoting peaceful and inclusive interactions within the school environment. The conclusion drawn from this study is that the formation of interfaith tolerance character is not only theoretical but also experiential. It is shaped through real-life, positive, and social interactions supported by school policies and culture. This research contributes empirical evidence to the development of character education within diverse school communities and reinforces the importance of civic education as a means to cultivate inclusive citizenship in a multicultural nation.
