Abstract
Representasi Budaya Perayaan Tahun Baru (Oshogatsu) dalam Novel Silence Karya Akiyoshi Rikako (Kajian Antropologi Sastra). Skripsi. Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang. Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni. Universitas Negeri Jakarta. ***** Representation of New Year (Oshogatsu) Celebration Culture in the Novel "Silence" by Akiyoshi Rikako (A Literary Anthropology Study). Thesis. Japanese Language Education Study Program. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Literary works are not merely products of an author's imagination but also serve as reflections or representations of cultural realities within a society. In the context of Japanese culture, the New Year tradition or Oshogatsu is one of the most sacred moments frequently reflected in fictional works. This research aims to describe the various forms of Oshogatsu cultural representation found in the novel "Silence" by Akiyoshi Rikako and to analyze the cultural reflexivity of these representations toward the social conditions of Japanese society depicted in the story. This study employs a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The research data consist of words, phrases, and sentences containing cultural elements of New Year celebrations in the novel "Silence." Data analysis was conducted using the Literary Anthropology theory by Suwardi Endraswara and Clifford Geertz, which emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between literary texts and cultural contexts, as well as the concept of cultural reflexivity. The research instrument utilized a data classification table to identify the cultural elements appearing within the narrative. The results of the study indicate that the novel "Silence" represents Oshogatsu culture through both material and non-material elements, including traditional foods (Osechi, Toshikoshi Soba, Kagami-mochi), religious rituals (Joya no Kane, Hatsumode, Hatsuhi no de), and social traditions (Otoshidama, Iwaibashi, and visits to the Family’s Houses). The findings also reveal a strong cultural reflexivity, in which the author utilizes a remote village setting (Yuki no Shima) to criticize the shift in traditional values due to modernization and Japan's demographic crisis. The New Year tradition in the novel is portrayed not merely as a formal celebration but as an instrument for binding community solidarity and local identity amidst the currents of changing times. Thus, this research demonstrates that the novel "Silence" can serve as a medium for an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture through a literary lens.
