Abstract

Menurunnya apresiasi generasi muda terhadap nilai budaya lokal akibat globalisasi dan perkembangan teknologi berdampak besar terhadap keberlangsungan warisan budaya terutama dalam pembahasan ini yaitu kain Ulos sebagai budaya dalam batak toba. Kain Ulos merupakan simbol kehangatan, berkat, dan persatuan sebagai bagian yang tak terpisahkan dalam adat maupun acara masyarakat Batak Toba. Penelitian ini merespons tantangan tersesbut dengan mengeksplorasi visual penciptaan picture book sebagai media pengenalan kain Ulos untuk anak. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara dengan narasumber budaya dan ahli bahasa, serta tinjauan literatur yang kemudian ditransformasikan menjadi praktik kreatif melalui tahapan emphaty, define, ideate, prototype, dan test. (Brown, 2009). Hasil penelitian berupa tampilan visual hasil eksplorasi visual dari picture book yang menyajikan perjalanan seorang anak menemukan keberagaman tujuh jenis Ulos melalui dialog dengan tentang tradisi penggunaan Ulos. Picture book ini dirancang dengan mempertimbangkan karakteristik anak sebagai target audience sehingga diharapkan dapat menjadi media efektif dalam membangun pemahaman dan apresiasi budaya sejak dini. Kata kunci : Picture Book, Kain Ulos, Batak Toba ***** The decline in young people's appreciation of local cultural values due to globalization and technological developments has had a major impact on the sustainability of cultural heritage, especially in this discussion, namely Ulos fabric as part of Batak Toba culture. Ulos fabric is a symbol of warmth, blessings, and unity as an integral part of Batak Toba customs and community events. This study responds to these challenges by exploring the visual creation of a picture book as a medium for introducing Ulos fabric to children. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the design thinking method. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews with cultural sources and language experts, and literature reviews, which were then transformed into creative practices through the stages of emphaty, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The results of the research are visual displays of the visual exploration of picture books that present a child's journey of discovering the diversity of seven types of Ulos through dialogue about the tradition of using Ulos. These picture books are designed with the characteristics of children as the target audience in mind, so they are expected to be an effective medium for building cultural understanding and appreciation from an early age.
