Abstract

***** This study aims to (1) reveal the interrelation of the intrinsic elements in the novel Rasina (characters, plot, and setting) in constructing the representation of European superiority over the indigenous people, (2) analyze the relations of political power, intellectual power, cultural power, and moral power of Europeans over the indigenous people as represented in the novel Rasina, and (3) describe the representation of European superiority over the indigenous people in the novel Rasina by Iksaka Banu. This research employs the theoretical approaches of Robert Stanton’s structuralism, Edward Said’s orientalism, and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The data sources consist of the novel Rasina as the primary data and books as well as journal articles as secondary data. The data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques to identify the forms of political, intellectual, cultural, and moral power relations in the novel Rasina. The results of the study reveal that 40 data representing forms of power relations were identified. Overall, the novel Rasina represents European superiority over the indigenous people as a relational system. The European characters analyzed demonstrate variations in attitudes, intentions, and moral positions; however, they still operate within the same structural framework, namely the VOC organization.
