Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the influence of preoccupied style and preference for online social interaction (POSI) on the tendency toward sadfishing among young adults who are active social media users. Sadfishing is a deliberate tendency in which an individual shares stories about emotional difficulties or problems they are currently experiencing, feelings of being misunderstood, and interpersonal relationship issues on social media with the aim of seeking sympathy and attention from others in the online world. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 105 participants aged 18–40 years. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The collected data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to examine the influence of the two independent variables on the tendency toward sadfishing. The results indicate that preoccupied style and preference for online social interaction simultaneously influence the tendency toward sadfishing (p < 0.001), accounting for 21.82% of the variance. Partially, preoccupied style does not influence the tendency toward sadfishing (p = 0.077). However, a preference for online social interaction does have a significant partial effect on the tendency toward sadfishing (p < 0.001). These results suggest that individuals with preoccupied style must also have a preference for online social interaction for sadfishing to occur.
