Abstract

***** This study aims to determine the effect of using the demonstration method on improving the ability to respond to the command "stop at the edge of the zebra crossing" in a child with moderate intellectual disability at SMPN 99 Jakarta. The subject of this study was an 8th-grade student with the initials RF, who experienced difficulties in understanding and responding to verbal safety instructions. This study used an experimental approach with a Single Subject Research (SSR) design of the A–B–A model. Data collection was conducted through direct observation using the latency recording technique (measuring response duration in seconds using a stopwatch). The data were analyzed using visual analysis within and across conditions, including condition length, trend direction, stability level, data path, level change, and percentage of overlap to determine the effect of the demonstration method on the participant's ability to respond to the command "stop at the edge of the zebra crossing." The results showed that the implementation of the demonstration method had a positive and significant effect on increasing the subject's response speed. This was evidenced by a reduction in latency time from the first baseline phase (A1) ranging between 16–17 seconds, to 10–28 seconds during the intervention phase (B), and reaching a shorter and stable condition in the second baseline phase (A2) at 5–6 seconds. Thus, the demonstration method is proven effective in improving the ability to respond to the command "stop at the edge of the zebra crossing" independently, which supports the development of safety behavior and independence for children with moderate intellectual disability in out-of-school environments.
