Abstract

***** This study aims to identify the types of conceptual metonymy and explain the mental access mechanism from the perspective of the Reference Point model in Chibi Maruko-chan Episodes 847–856. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study identifies and classifies conceptual metonymies found in the characters' utterances based on the taxonomy proposed by Radden and Kövecses (2007), and analyzes their mental access mechanism using Langacker's (1999) Reference Point model. The primary data consist of the characters' dialogues in Chibi Maruko-chan, collected through observation and note-taking techniques. The findings reveal 37 instances of conceptual metonymy, which are classified into 12 types of Idealized Cognitive Models (ICMs): Thing and Part ICM, Constitution ICM, Event ICM, Category and Member ICM, Category and Property ICM, Action ICM, Causation ICM, Production ICM, Control ICM, Possession ICM, Containment ICM, and Location ICM. Among these, Event ICM is the most frequently occurring type, with seven instances. The analysis from the Reference Point perspective demonstrates that metonymy is not merely a linguistic substitution but a cognitive mechanism in which the conceptualizer employs a cognitively more salient entity as a reference point to mentally access the target within the same conceptual domain. The study also finds that the conceptualization of metonymy is supported by the figure-ground mechanism and influenced by both shared knowledge and cultural knowledge, which facilitate the identification of the intended target. These findings indicate that the dialogues in the anime naturally reflect the use of conceptual metonymy in everyday communication while also extending the application of cognitive linguistic studies to Japanese audiovisual media.
