Abstract
ABSTRAK MAHIRA ALKEISA PUTRI SYAHBANA. Pencarian Identitas Diri Tokoh Jayanegara dalam Novel Kerumunan Terakhir Karya Okky Madasari: Psikoanalisis Jacques Lacan. Skripsi. The Search for Jayanegara's Identity in Okky Madasari's Novel Kerumunan Terakhir: A Psychoanalysis Based on Jacques Lacan. Thesis. Jakarta: Indonesian Literature Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Jakarta State University, 2026. This study aims to analyze and describe the structural elements (characters, plot, setting) as well as the process of self-identity exploration in the main character, Jayanegara, in Okky Madasari’s novel *The Last Crowded* through a literary psychology approach using Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing data collection techniques such as literature review and content analysis of the text—including narrative, dialogue, and monologue—within the novel. Based on an analysis grounded in Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory, the protagonist’s process of self-identity search manifests across three psychic orders: The Real, characterized by deep trauma resulting from his father’s betrayal and his mother’s departure—as objects fulfilling his primary needs—which trigger a psychic rupture and unconscious drives beyond logic; the Imaginary, characterized by a sense of lack resulting from comparing his self-image with others (his father and Maera), which drives Jayanegara to create an idealized false identity as “Matajaya” in the new world in order to gain recognition from the other, such as the character Akardewa; Symbolic, in the form of the subject’s attachment to the linguistic system, social norms, and laws prevailing in the new world, where that identity ultimately collapses due to an inability to balance actual reality with the illusion of an ideal image. This study concludes that, from a Lacanian perspective, Jayanegara’s sense of self is not a solid and intact identity, but rather a fragmented identity vulnerable to collapse due to the shadow of the Father figure’s authority and the pressure for social recognition in the new world. Keywords: The Search for Self-Identity, Jacques Lacan’s Psychoanalysis, Literary Psychology, Indonesian Novels, The Last Crowd.
