Abstract
This study is motivated by the distinctive characteristics of musical drama as a form of performing literature that combines dialogue, songs, acting, dance, improvisation, and interaction with the audience in conveying meaning. This combination causes speech acts in musical drama to be influenced not only by words but also by intonation, facial expressions, movements, music, and the context of each scene. This study aims to describe the forms and functions of illocutionary speech acts in the musical drama Jojo by the CBHS Community (Cerita Beda Hak Sama) and their implications for teaching drama texts, particularly speaking and presenting skills, at Phase F of senior high school. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data sources consisted of utterances found in dialogues, songs, improvisations, and audience interactions in the musical drama Jojo. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and were analyzed based on Geoffrey Leech’s classification of illocutionary functions. The results revealed 408 utterance pairs within 92 dialogue contexts. The data consisted of 132 collaborative speech acts (32%), 113 competitive speech acts (28%), 86 conflictive speech acts (22%), and 77 convivial speech acts (18%). Collaborative speech acts were the most dominant category, with stating as the most frequently occurring form, totaling 72 data. This dominance indicates that the characters’ utterances were primarily used to express thoughts, feelings, opinions, situations, facts, and information. The illocutionary meanings in the musical drama were also reinforced through songs, expressions, movements, and performers’ improvisations. The findings can be applied as teaching materials for drama text instruction to help students understand the communicative functions of utterances, relationships among characters, conflicts, and story messages, while also developing their speaking skills, creativity, language politeness, and improvisational abilities.
