Abstract
***** This study aimed to analyze Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in the main character of the novel Naomi wa Akhwatuha by Hisyam al-Khusni from the perspective of literary psychology, by identifying the ego defense mechanisms in the main character according to Sigmund Freud's theory, verifying the conformity of the character's symptoms with the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and determining the etiological factors of the disorder. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected using exploratory, focused, and analytical reading techniques, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results identified 62 textual quotations distributed across the defense mechanisms, with repression and rationalization ranking first with 7 quotations each, followed by regression, projection, apathy, fantasy, and stereotype with 6 quotations each, then displacement, reaction formation, and aggression with 5 quotations each, and finally sublimation with 3 quotations. Furthermore, the character's symptoms were found to meet all five diagnostic criteria for DID in the DSM-5. The study concluded that the disorder developed as a result of a series of repeated psychological traumas from childhood to adolescence: maternal abandonment, female genital mutilation, repeated physical violence from her brother, and attempted rape with maternal blaming. The study recommends conducting comparative research between literary representation and actual clinical cases, applying the same methodology to other literary works, and examining the role of psychotherapy in reintegrating alter personalities.
