Abstract
***** Demonstrations are a form of collective action undertaken by university students in response to social conditions perceived as unjust. According to the Social Identity Model of Collective Action (SIMCA), perceived injustice is one of the key psychological factors that encourages individuals to engage in collective action. This study aimed to examine the effect of perceived injustice on collective action among university students who had participated in demonstrations. A quantitative research approach was employed involving 206 university students with prior demonstration experience, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Perceived Injustice Questionnaire (PIQ) and the Belief-Aligned Collective Action Scale (BCA), both of which had been adapted into Indonesian. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression with IBM SPSS Statistics 29. The results indicated that perceived injustice had a significant effect on collective action (B = -0.609; β = -0.393; t = -6.105; p < .001), with an R² value of .154. The negative regression coefficient resulted from the reverse scoring direction of the PIQ; substantively, the findings indicate that higher levels of perceived injustice are associated with a greater tendency to engage in collective action. These findings suggest that perceived injustice accounts for 15.4% of the variance in collective action, while the remaining 84.6% is explained by other factors not examined in this study. This study reinforces the role of perceived injustice as an important predictor of collective action in the context of student demonstrations in Indonesia.
