Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menelusuri hegemoni yang terefleksi dalam novel Inside Out dan Outside In oleh Maria V. Snyder. Dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni dari Antonio Gramsci, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan bagaimana hegemoni beroperasi novel ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis deskriptif sebagai desain penelitian dalam menganalisis narasi dan dialog yang diklasifikasikan dengan teori Gramsci. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah kelompok dominan yang direpresentasikan oleh keluarga Trava dan Controller berhasil melakukan hegemoni kepada kelompok subordinat yang direpresentasikan oleh warga Inside. Kelompok dominan berhasil mempengaruhi pemikiran kelompok subordinat melalui institusi-institusi di bidang pendidikan dan keagamaan dengan menanamkan pemikiran bahwa mereka harus mematuhi kelompok dominan. Selain itu, mereka juga berhasil menekan kelompok subordinat malalui Pop Cops yang merupakan representasi dari aparatus negara. Hal ini membuat Scrubs percaya bahwa keluarga Trava dan controller adalah pemimpin mereka sehingga mereka harus patuh pada mereka. Namun, bukan berarti bahwa mereka tidak bisa lepas dari kelompok dominan. Kelompok subordinat mampu melawan kelompok dominan dengan melakukan counter hegemoni. Trella, tokoh utama dalam novel ini, berhasil menyatukan upper level dan lower level dengan mengumpulkan kedua level dan membangkitkan kesadaran mereka bahwa mereka selama ini telah didominasi agar mereka dapat bekerja sama dan mengembalikan keseimbangan kekuasaan seperti sedia kala. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa instansi yang ada di masyarakat mampu mempengaruhi pola pikir masyarakat seperti mematuhi kelompok dominan dan mengikuti peraturan. Selain itu, kecerdasan, kerjasama yang baik, saling percaya satu sama lain,dan tidak mudah menyerah yang dimiliki oleh kelompok subordinat mampu menciptakan kekuatan agar dapat terbebas dari dominasi kelompok dominan. This study focuses on investigating hegemony which is reflected in Inside Out and Outside In by Maria V. Snyder. By using Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this study aims to find out how hegemony operates in the novel. This research uses descriptive analysis method as a research design in analyzing the classified narrations and dialogues based on Gramsci's theory. The result of this study is the dominant group which is represented by Trava family and Controller successfully creates hegemony to dominate the subordinate group which is represented by the Scrubs. The dominant group manages to affect the subordinate groups' thought through institutions in the field of education and religion by implanting the thought that they must obey the dominant group. Moreover, they also managed to suppress the subordinate group through the Pop Cops which is the representation of state apparatus. This makes scrubs believe that the Trava family and Controller are their leaders so they must obey them. However, it does not mean that they cannot be free from the dominant group. Subordinate group is able to resist the dominant group by creating counter hegemony. Trella, the main character in this novel, manage to unite the upper level and lower level by gathering both levels, and awakening their awareness that they are being dominated so that they can work together and restore the balance of power. This study reveals that institutions in society are able to influence the mindset of the society such as obeying the dominant group and following the rule. Furthermore, subordinate group’s intelligence, good cooperation, trust each other, and do not give up easily are able to create the power to be free from the domination of the dominant group.
