Abstract

Penelitian Ini bertujuan untuk menelaah peran tubuh dan pikiran dalam pengkonstruksian identitas di dunia posthuman dalam trilogy Uglies karya Scott Westerfeld. Penelitian ini berfokus pada lima karakter yang masing-masing memiliki identitas berbeda untuk menganalisis tubuh dan pikiran mereka dalam pengkonstruksian identitas. Dengan menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif interpretatif, penelitian ini mengaplikasikan konsep heterotopia, kekuasaan disipliner, dan pengkonstruksian identitas milik Michel Foucault berikut dengan pandangan Hayles terhadap posthuman untuk menganalisis tubuh dan pikiran karakter-karakter yang dipilih sebagai fokus. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkap pengaruh besar kekuasaan dalam pengkonstruksian identitas dalam novel yang berlatar distopia ketika penguasa otoriter menggunakan tubuh dan pikiran sebagai penanda identitas dan media praktik kekuasaan. This study aims to explore the role of body and mind in constructing identity in posthuman world of Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies trilogy. This study focuses in five characters to analyze how their body and mind play roles in constructing identity as they carry different identity. By using descriptive interpretative research method, this study applies Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, disciplinary power, and identity construction as well as Hayles’ posthuman views to analyze the body and mind of the characters chosen as focus. The result of the study reveals the great influence of power in constructing identity as the novel set in a dystopian world where authorities use the body and mind as identity marker and the medium of power exercise.
