Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa karakteristik fantasi dan struktur fantasi dan menemukan hubungan antara plot dan struktur di dalam novel “New Moon” karya Stephenie Meyer. Analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan teori karakteristik fantasi oleh John H. Timmerman dan struktur fantasi oleh John Grant dan John Clute. Terdapat enam karakteristik fantasi oleh Timmerman yaitu, Keterlibatan cerita tradisional, Penggambaran karakter dan kepahlawanan, Keterlibatan dunia lain, Penggunaan magis dan hal supernatural, Perjuangan antara yang jahat dan yang baik, dan Petualangan. Struktur fantasi terdiri dari tiga tahap, yaitu tahap Recognition, Metamorphosis dan Eucatastrophe. Metode yang diterapkan pada penelitian ini adalah analisa deskriptif. Penulis menganalisa narasi dan dialog yang menunjukkan karakteristik fantasi dan yang menggambarkan struktur fantasi di dalam novel. Dari hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa enam karakteristik fantasi ditemukan ada di dalam novel “New Moon” dan begitu pula tiga tahapan struktur fantasi ditemukan di dalam novel “New Moon”, namun tidak setiap struktur yang digambarkan berada dalam setiap tahapan plot. Hanya empat tahapan plot yang ditemukan berada dalam tiga tahapan struktur fantasi. The purpose of this study is to analyze the fantasy characteristics and fantasy structure and find out the relation between plot and the structure in Stephenie Meyer’s “New Moon” novel. The analysis is done by employing John H. Timmerman’s theory of fantasy characteristics and John Grant and John Clute’s theory of fantasy structure. There are six fantasy characteristics proposed by Timmerman; Use of traditional story, The depiction of common characters and heroism, The evocation of another world, The employment of magic and supernatural, The revelation of the struggle between good and evil and The tracing of a quest. Fantasy structure consists of three stages; they are Recognition, Metamorphosis and Eucatastrophe. The method of this study is descriptive analysis. The writer analyzed the narrations and dialogues that identify the fantasy characteristics and fantasy structure in the novel. From the analysis it can be concluded that the six fantasy characteristics and three stages of fantasy structure are found in “New Moon” novel, although not every fantasy structure is described in each stage of plot. Only four stages of plot are found in three fantasy structure stages.
