Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu ide-ide utama The Beat Generation apa saja yang tergambar didalam puisi Howl dalam rangka untuk mengungkapkan bentuk perlawanan budaya. The Beat Generation adalah sekelompok penulis Amerika di tahun 1950-an yang dikenal karena penggunaan bentuk tulisan non-tradisional dan penolakan terhadap nilai-nilai sosial. The Beat Generation cenderung menentang penyesuaian dan tradisi yang ada and menolak segala bentuk gaya hidup yang umum di Amerika. Dalam rangka untuk mengungkapkan bentuk perlawanan budaya yang dilakukan The Beat Generation, penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis interpretatif yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan fakta berdasarkan interpretasi yang sesuai dan juga menggunakan teori semiotik dari Roland Barthes yang berisi penjelasan tentang makna denotasi, konotasi, dan proses perubahan makna dari denotasi ke konotasi. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menganalisa salah satu puisi dari Allen Ginsberg yang berjudul Howl dan mengandung 112 baris dibagi menjadi 3 bagian. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada banyak signifier yang menunjukan tiga ide-ide utama dari The Beat Generation dan satu tema tambahan yang berhubungan dengan kondisi Carl Solomon. Ada Experimentation with Drugs (Benzedrine, peyote solidities, and Supernatural ecstasies), Sexual Freedom (balled, the snatches of a million girls, and cocksman), Rejection of Middle Class Value (scholars of war, threw potato salad, cooked rotten animals), and other themes (madder than I am, invisible humor, fifty more shocks. Kesimpulanya, ide utama The Beat Generation yang menggambarkan bentuk perlawanan budaya yang paling banyak digambarkan di dalam puisi Howl adalah Rejection of Middle Class Value This study is intended to figure out the central idea of The Beat Generation in Howl poem in order to reveal their countercultural. The Beat Generation is a group of American writers in the 1950’s which known because they use non-traditional form and their rejection of conventional social values. The Beat Generation tends to against the conformity and tradition, and also rejects all of mainstream lifestyle and tradition happened in America. In order to reveal the beat generation counterculture, the writer uses descriptive analytical interpretative method which is used to reveal the fact with appropriate interpretation and also using semiotics theory by Roland Barthes consists of the explanation about denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and the chain of meaning from denotative to connotative. In this study, the writer analyzes one of Allen Ginsberg poem entitled Howl which consists of 112 lines separated in 3 parts. The result of the study shows that there are signifier indicates those three central ideas of the beat generation that mostly conveyed in Howl and one additional theme relates with the condition of Carl Solomon. There are Experimentation with Drugs (Benzedrine, peyote solidities, and Supernatural ecstasies), Sexual Freedom (balled, the snatches of a million girls, and cocksman), Rejection of Middle Class Value (scholars of war, threw potato salad, cooked rotten animals), and Other themes (madder than I am, invisible humor, fifty more shocks). In conclusion, the central idea that indicates the beat generation counter culture that mostly conveyed in Howl poem is Rejection of Middle Class Value.
